Today is a very important feast day for all first order Franciscans. The feast of the Portiuncula. The Portiuncula is a chapel that was given to St. Francis, it’s where he inaugurated his order, where he founded the Poor Clares, and where his earthly life came to an end. In this same chapel is also where tradition says that St. Francis obtained from the Pope an indulgence (remission from punishment for all sins) that is offered to anyone who visits the Portiuncula chapel in its feast day. The indulgence has also been extended to various other churches throughout the world, in carrying on of Francis’ goal of having a place for people to feel God’s mercy and love. One such approved location is the replica of the Portiuncula here at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land here in Washington DC.
