Today is St. Angela Merici’s fest day. St. Angela Merici was born in 1470. Both of her parents died and she was then left as an orphan but then she lived with her uncle and her sister. Her sister fell very sick, and died. St. Angela was disturbed with her sister’s death because her sister had not received her last rites. She then joined the third order Franciscans. Together with her friends that were tertiary Franciscans, they began to gather girls and to teach them. St. Angela thought that the education of girls was very important and wanted it to be available to all. So when the Pope asked St. Angela to become a nurse, she said “no”.
St. Angela Merici created the Ursuline Order of Nuns and they went to the Holy Land. When she went to the Holy Land, she fell ill and became blind when she visited, but she continued her trip to the Holy Land. When she returned to the spot where she became blind, her eyesight came back. She passed away in 1540.
Saint Angela, you were not afraid of change. You did not let stereotypes keep you from serving. Help us to overcome our fear of change in order to follow God’s call and allow others to follow theirs. Amen
